2018 La Vida Awards: Quote of the Year
By Andy Martinez
When players and managers are at the mic before and after 162-regular season games, you’re bound to have tons of sound. Sometimes you’re left with run-of-the-mill quotes. Other times, and those are the best times, you get some gold. This season was no different. Trying to pick three sound bites was tough, but these were our favorites.
Honorable Mention:
Martín Pérez
The Rangers’ pitcher suffered a freak injury last December on his ranch in Venezuela. When one of his cows charged at him, he tried getting out of the way, breaking his non-pitching elbow and requiring surgery. He was expected to miss about four months. Luckily for Pérez and the Rangers, he was back in Spring Training.
Honorable Mention:
Yasiel Puig
Puig is known for his outspokenness. It’s made people either love him or hate him. After the Dodgers lost their second straight World Series, Puig said this to a group of reporters. Whatever else you think of him, he’s always honest.
WINNER:
Álex Cora
After the government of Puerto Rico released the official death toll from Hurricane Maria, President Donald Trump tweeted that the numbers were not correct. The Red Sox manager was frustrated that it was becoming a political issue, rather than a humanitarian one.
