Andrelton Simmons headlines 2018 Wilson Defensive Players of the Year
By Tab Bamford
Los Angeles Angels shortstop Andrelton Simmons added a fifth career Wilson Defensive Player of the Year Award to his collection on Wednesday night.
The Curaçao native had a .984 fielding percentage, 21 defensive runs saved and a 3.1 dWAR for the 2018 season. He won a Rawlings Gold Glove Award for the fourth time earlier this week.
Unlike the Rawlings Gold Glove Awards, these awards are based on a specific mix of metrics. The formula is 25 percent dWAR, 25 percent defensive runs saved, 10 percent fielding percentage and data logged by the baseball experts working for the scouting service Inside Edge (fielding and arm ratings accounted for 20 percent each). Pitchers and catchers have different, unique formulas.
There were also awards for the best overall individual defender and a team award. The Arizona Diamondbacks won the overall team award.
