The hug heard round the internet
The NL wild-card game went 13 innings before the Rockies ended the Cubs’ season at Wrigley Field to cap a three-day, three-city trip that now leads them to Miller Park for a day off before the start of the Division Series on Thursday night against the Brewers.
In a game that featured two of the top NL MVP candidates, light-hitting Rockies backup catcher Tony Wolters delivered the most important blow with a game-winning RBI single in the top of the 13th inning. One other moment from that postseason thriller will be remembered for years. Few who participated or witnessed Tuesday night’s classic at Wrigley Field will ever forget the hug felt round the internet in the 11th inning between two of the National League’s best young superstars.
“Well this is a great one,” Rockies manager Bud Black said. “I think this is a classic. I think this will go down as a Major League Baseball classic. We feel good about how we played. That’s what I think is the most important thing here is how we played as a team and how the contributions came from so many guys.
“And it’s awesome that a number of these fellas will always remember this game. So I mean such good stuff for our players.”
The Cubs’ Javy Báez hugged the Rockies’ Nolan Arenado on his way to third base, or was Arenado the one who hugged Báez? The hug made some noise both at Wrigley and on the wonderful world wide web.
The social media reaction to the Báez-Arenado hug matched the quality of the exciting start to baseball’s 2018 postseason.
Here are just a few of the best social media posts about the hug:
They’re Latino, and Latinos hug everyone, amirite?
Burn!
They’ll always be hermanos.
What are you looking at, Javy?
OK, A-Rod.
Best of luck in 2018, Javy!
Arenado’s heart will go on – to Milwaukee for the NLDS.
We snapped this pic of Arenado and CarGo before the game, do you think it was planned out? You be the judge.
