2014 – Cardinals outfielder Oscar Taveras, 22, is killed in a car crash near his hometown of Puerto Plata, in the Dominican Republic.

2005 – Freddy Garcia threw seven shutout innings as the White Sox completed a sweep of the Houston Astros in the World Series. Garcia became the first Venezuelan starter to win a World Series game and manager Ozzie Guillen became the first Latino manager to win a World Series. It was the White Sox first championship since 1917.

2004 – Prior to Game 3 of the World Series, Edgar Martinez received the Roberto Clemente Award.

1997 – Edgar Renteria singled with two outs in the bottom of the 11th inning to give the Florida Marlins their first World championship with a 3-2 victory over the Cleveland Indians.

1985 – In Game 6 of the World Series, Royals’ Jorge Orta started an eighth inning tally when he was ruled safe at first base by umpire Don Denkinger. The Royals scored two runs to win, 2-1, forcing a seventh game.

1960 – Calvin Griffith, president of the Washington Senators, announced the decision to move the club to the Minneapolis/St. Paul area.
