OTD
2012 – The Yankees made history but it didn’t end well. New York became the first team since the 1927 Athletics to have three players with 2,500+ career hits in the starting lineup (Alex Rodriguez, Derek Jeter and Ichiro Suzuki). However, Seattle’s Félix Hernández hit A-Rod with a pitch and broke his hand in the eighth inning of a 4-2 Mariners win.
2011 – Roberto Alomar, Bert Blyleven and Pat Gillick are inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame.
2002 – Miguel Tejada hit his 117th career home run, breaking Eddie Joost’s career record for an Athletic shortstop. Tejada lead the A’s to a 5-1 win over Anaheim.
2001 – Texas traded first baseman Andrés Galarraga to the Giants for minor leaguers Chris Magruder, Erasmo Ramirez and Todd Ozias.
1999 – The Giants acquired Liván Hernández from the Marlins in exchange for pitchers Jason Grilli and Nate Bump. The trade occurs on Bump’s 23rd birthday.
1995 – Philadelphia pitcher Omar Olivares hit a two-run, pinch-hit home run. The Phillies lost 11-3 but Olivares became the first pitcher to hit a pinch-hit homer since 1990.
Happy birthday!
