OTD

2009 – Two historic achievements took place in the same game. Houston’s Iván Rodríguez caught the 2,227th game of his career, breaking the record held by Carlton Fisk. On the other side of the diamond, Rangers shortstop Omar Vizquel tied Hall of Famer Luis Aparicio with his 2,677th hit, the most ever by a Venezuelan.

1993 – Cleveland’s Carlos Baerga hit three home runs in a 9-5 loss to Detroit. Three players, Baerga and the Tigers’ Travis Fryman and Dan Gladden, had at least two home runs, tying an American League record for a nine inning contest.

1960 – Boston’s Ted Williams became the fourth player in major league history to hit 500 home runs, joining Babe Ruth, Jimmie Foxx and Mel Ott. Williams’ two-run blast off Wynn Hawkins at Cleveland Stadium led the Red Sox to a 3-1 victory over the Indians.

1958 – After becoming the first player of color to play for the Detroit Tigers just 11 days prior, Ozzie Virgil collected five hits in five at-bats in his first home game at Briggs Stadium.
