Stories from inside the HOF: José Fernández

Gone too soon. On September 20, Cuban-born José Fernández confessed to his teammate Martin Prado that his game against the Washington Nationals was “the best game he ever pitched.”

It would be his last. 

On September 25, 2016, Fernandez tragically died in a boat accident in off Miami Beach. The next night, every player on the Miami Marlins wore a Jose Fernandez jersey. 

After the game, his teammate Ichiro Suzuki sent his jersey where he felt it belonged: Cooperstown.
