José Ramírez joins the 30-30 Club

With his 30th stolen base of the season, José Ramírez joined an exclusive group of Latino players who have stolen 30 and hit 30 over the fence in the same season.

Ramírez is just the 11th Latino player to reach the 30-30 Club, and the first since Hanley Ramírez with the Marlins ten years ago. Seven of the 11 players on the list are Dominican.

José Canseco became the first Latino player to reach the two benchmarks and went on to become baseball’s first 40-40 man 30 years ago. Canseco is still the only Cuban player to join the list.

Five players have achieved 30-30 status more than once, led by Alfonso Soriano doing so in four different seasons; Soriano became the second Latino player to be a 40-40 man in 2006.

Here are the players who have qualified thus far, ranked by number of seasons reaching the club.

Ramírez could join an even more exclusive club if he leads the league in home runs and stolen bases. Only one player has lead his league in homers and steals since the live ball era began in 1920: Philadelphia’s Chuck Klein, who did it in 1932 when he hit 32 home runs and stole 20 bases.

Chicago’s Javier Báez and Cleveland’s Francisco Lindor, both Puerto Rican, have some work to do but both might be able to join this list in 2018 as well.
