Yasiel Puig joins all-time Cuban greats in history books
By Tab Bamford
Before Game 4 of the World Series, only two Cuban-born players in major league history had hit three World Series home runs. With a mighty swing in the sixth inning, Dodgers outfielder Yasiel Puig joined that exclusive list.
Puig’s 439-foot blast off Eduardo Rodríguez was his third career homer in the Fall Classic, joining Hall of Famer Tony Pérez and José Canseco as the only players born in Cuba to hit that many career World Series homers.
Tony Pérez
Pérez appeared in five World Series, four with Cincinnati and one with Philadelphia. In 27 career World Series games Pérez hit three home runs and drove in 11 runs. Pérez was part of two World Series champion teams (1975, 1976 with Cincinnati).
José Canseco
Canseco opened the 1988 World Series against the Dodgers with a grand slam in the second inning of Game 1 off Tim Belcher. He appeared three World Series, three consecutive Fall Classics with Oakland (1988-90) and once with the New York Yankees (2000). In 14 career World Series games Canseco hit three home runs and drove in ten runs. He won a ring with the A’s in 1989 and the Yankees in 2000.
Yasiel Puig
Puig is playing in his second consecutive World Series with the Dodgers. In 11 games (through Game 4), Puig has hit three home runs and driven in eight runs in the Fall Classic.
